The Theory and Practice Of Oligarchical Collectivism, sometimes refered to simply as The Book, is a higly illegal piece of contraband, and as such, if a party member was found with it in their possession, they are executed. It is a political pamphlet read by all persons seeking full membership in The Brotherhood. The book itself claims authorship by Emmanuel Goldstein, however, O'Brien tells Winston that it was in fact authored by the party. The Book is a critical analysis of the totalitarian system in Oceania, divided into chapters named after Ingsoc propaganda slogans.
