TV Adaptation 1954 - In 1954, the British BBC Sunday Night Theatre produced an at the time much aclaimed and discussed adaptation of Nineteen Eighty-Four. Winston Smith was played by Peter Cushing. The adaptation was distinctly more oriented towards science fiction then later adaptations.

- Before the adaptation was aired, only the Coronation of Elizabeth II had attracted such a large audience.
- The Junior Anti-Sex League sash which Julia wears is chequered in this adaptation, not scarlet. The explanation is very simple: It is a black-and-white production.
