Syme - First name unknown. Ingsoc Outer Party member, philologist, and Newspeak specialist, working in the Minitrue Research Department with the Eleventh Edition of the Newspeak Dictionary. He is described in the novel as "a tiny creature, smaller than Winston, with dark hair and large, protuberant eyes, at once mournful and derisive, which seemed to search your face closely while he was speaking to you." Syme has a fanatical faith in Ingsoc, embraces the propaganda wholeheartedly, and regularly attends public executions. He has important weaknesses, though: He is too intelligent for his own good and understands the mechanisms of propaganda too well and he is an intellectual who mingles with artists and plays chess in the Chestnut Tree Café. His fate is inevitable: He will be vaporized.
