Emmanuel Goldstein is the personification used by Ingsoc to direct hate and rage away from itself and towards an eternal scapegoat. Goldstein and The Brotherhood are blamed for all of the party's problems. It's unclear if Goldstein is a pure propaganda construction or a former Inner Party member who has fallen into disgrace, the latter being the official version.
He is the supposed author of the blasphemous book The Theory and Practice Of Oligarchical Collectivism, which is required reading for all potential members of The Brotherhood.
Goldstein is described as having a long hooked nose and a fuzzy aureole of white hair.
